What is ear wax?

Ear wax, medically known as cerumen, is your bodies’ natural protection against pathogens otherwise known as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites all of which cause disease. It is a naturally occurring process and it acts as a barrier to insects and water. Intrinsically wax can build up in our ears and start to cause us difficulties.

Why do we get ear wax build up?

Ear wax is a very common problem as some people naturally produce more ear wax than others, because of this, they are more prone to a build-up. Sometimes the build-up gets dry and thick and blocks the ear canal causing reduced hearing and sometimes tinnitus.

In these situations, if you try and remove the wax yourself, you can push this further down the ear canal making impaction worse and potentially risking scratches, irritation, infection or a perforation to your ear drum. This can cause damage to your hearing and balance.

In addition, with the use of headphones, ear plugs and hearing aids we put our ears under more pressure than normal and this contact stimuli produces our bodies natural defence response to produce more ear wax to protect the canal. Making the build-up worse.

Ear wax is very dense and can reduce the positive effects of wearing a hearing aid which reduces hearing ability, having a negative effect on our quality of life.

Symptoms you may be experiencing with wax build-up

Usually wax will naturally make its way out of our ear canal over time and we can wipe it away from the outer part of our ears. However, wax build-up maybe the reason if you are experiencing the below symptoms:
